Ye Walks

Who would have thought that gospel music would have rendered young Jamaicans speechless? Yeezy taught me.

Who would have thought that Jamaica would host one of the most influential artistes ever? Yeezy taught me.

Yeezy taught me well.

When the news broke that Kanye West would be bringing his acclaimed gospel show to the shores of Jamaica, scepticism was high. Living in a country which features more churches than Sean Paul features on songs, why would we need more gospel music? The answer is quite simple, young Jamaicans have lost the initiative to attend an institution that features prominent members chauffeuring wanted criminals, a system that doesn’t facilitate love but encourages hate and congregations that partake in a communion of hypocrisy.

Emancipation Park was the venue for this renowned praise and worship session, with doubts surfacing islandwide but like Thomas those doubts quickly dissipated as patrons could touch the lace of Kanye’s Yeezy sneakers. Kanye led the crowd into musical bliss as he controlled the reins of his 100 member choir who rained down blessings upon a spiritually dehydrated congregation as his reign of musical royalty continued. ‘Jesus walks’ was a crowd favourite as jubilation ran through the congregation that stirred up emotions that could only be expressed in the most biblical of words … Amen.  His selection of Ultra Lightbeam and Father stretch my hands made a direct call to heaven as the choir members dialled perfect tones all around, heaven answered with a roll of thunder that shook the park that reminded us God loves beautiful music.

Sunday Service in Jamaica on a Friday was the most unexpected but most deserved way to end a tough week of life for some but it created a moment that will last a lifetime for all.

Thank you, Ye.

Selah.
